It seemed that a tinge of electricity was in the air. Everyone was moving in fast motion going here, there, back. The final bell. Students moving in the way similar to that of one of those fast-pace cuts of a city-street at night, or that of blood cells flowing through the body in one of those Biology videos. A few would stop but for a moment before continuing onward. Converging to the river of bodies, then diverging through doors and hallways. School was out, everybody wanted out - save for a select few. Those who had nowhere special to go and had business to attend to. Those who had no friends, or family, or life than what they materialized for themselves. And while they came in different sizes, from the lanky hieghts of Lucian Stone to the short, portly body of so-and-so, they were connected by some similar reason. Referred to most easily as "studying".
But, wait; what an oxymoron it is to allude studying to the name of Lucian Stone! But no matter how far-fetched, it was indeed, true. Lucian's schedule for that day was utterly, and desparingly, clear. And while as high as his animosity for school-work was, it wasn't even in the same league as that of what was awaiting him at home. Luce would just rather get some work done in the sanctity of the quiet library. He was falling dangerously behind in Government and found that his teacher's generosity was waning. The "mood" to work was in him today anyway; so, when life gives you lemons.
Luce stopped at the door. Christ, he hadn't know in how long he had even stepped into a real library. It was quaint anyways, which amused Lucian. The placed paled in comparison to his father's grandeur "drawing room" as he so artfully referred to it as. Here there were many rows of books, a few wood tables and matching chairs, and a little lounge center with couches as such. After browsing around a bit, Luce selected one of the back tables next to a large, warm window to set up camp. From his leather book-bag he pulled out two texts on Government, a folder with some paper, and a pencil or two. Within a chair's lean away from the reference section, Lucian was fairly satisfied.
The opposite chair served as a foot-rest for a pair of long, tired legs. The adjacent one a place for the brown Armani jacket to rest, and the other for the bag. Sucessfully occupying all four chairs for himself, Luce loosened his shirt collar, rolled up his sleeves, and set to work. Well, at least he tried to set to work, as he was quite unsuccessful. The moment his vivid green eyes looked over his assignment specifications his mind went completely blank. What the hell does all this ridiculous babble mean? he thought to himself dully. The essay was to be written somewhere along the lines of a compare and contast some unknown country with some other unknown country. Lucian flipped one of his texts to the index, matching a name, but found the text even more contradictory and vague. He became quite frustrated quite early.
He spied around the library from his seat; boredly scoping out who else was around in order to prove a good distraction.

Jane sat at her desk in the front, her pen moving furiously across the page as she took down notes. Her long blond hair hung loose around her head, hiding her face as she bent down. Her English teacher seemed to be on a notes spree and wouldn’t relent until they had filled 8 pages full. Jane’s hand was exhausted and was cramping up, but she still had a paragraph left. She could make it before the bell rang in one minute. She could hear other students making little noises of angry or displeasure. Their teacher was definitely in a bad mood.
Finally she finished just as the bell rang for the end of school. She packed her notebook and pen away, standing up and wiping her palms on her faded jeans. She wore a blue halter-top and had a light sweater hanging off her arm. She picked up her backpack and nodded at a few friends before making her way to the library. She had plenty of time before going home so she decided to go the Library to catch up on some homework. It was always quiet in there and a good atmosphere for work. She rarely bumped into her friends in there, unless they were looking for her or for a book.
Thoughts ran through her head as she walked down the hallway to the library door. She thought about her previous class and how she would not enjoy writing up section one and two for history. She had to make a time line! In her junior year she still did those silly things! But it did help her learn the events and order or things. She did feel like a little 6th grader though. Her history teacher was equally weird as her English teacher, but that was life.
As she entered the library she saw a familiar face. Lucian Stone, the last person she expected to see. But there he was, with a book open in front of him no less. She wondered if she would ignore him ad sit at the opposite side of the room or go up and sit across from him. They were friends, of sorts, and she had no problem talking to him. He just got on her nerves sometimes, and that was hard. She believed he had the potential of being a good guy that girls could genuinely like, but he decided to be the jerk. She didn’t like that at all. But she couldn’t change him, he made that clear.
She finally decided that her few hours left at school could be spiced up a bit by his insults and smirks. She walked over to him and pulled out the chair from under his feet as she planted her books down on the table. She flashed him a grin, one that wasn’t completely really, but more of a ‘hi I’m here.’ She sat down and opened her book.
“Mind if I join you?” That question was of course too late, but she wasn’t moving.

Lucian was completely engrosed in absolutely nothing at the moment. Nothing of interest had come upon him, so he set to staring out the window to his left with the blankest, wide-eyed expression. It was the typical fall day outside. Most of the trees had lost their leaves and little squirrels were running around the grounds foraging for their winter food. Some nameless faces passed by; each intent on lugging their large backpacks to wherever they were going. Lucian stared quietly, the sun pouring in across his face and table, streaming right through his translucent green eyes.
Lucian's attention snapped back with a start as his heels were suddenly in a meeting with the floor. He was all ready to voice his opinion on the matter - the first thing his face did was to turn pissed - but then had to check his anger when he recognized someone familiar. Good thing it was only Jane and not some smart-ass freshman, or else the library would not be peaceful for long. She sat down, and Lucian's blank stare ensued.
Oh, what was he to do now? He had to come up with a game plan, or something, anything, if he was to win the bet. But, Lucian was hesitant to admit, that it was going to be harder than he thought. How does one convince someone to love them when that someone knows the love is merely a sham - a bet? This was like a race in which the opponent got the map and the other nothing. However, Luce could hatch up a good deal of strategy; all he needed was a foothold.
"Heeeyya sweetcheeks," Luce dragged out nonchalantly, the typical flash coming back to his eyes, "Hows it hangin'?" He took no care in the way he looked over Jane. His eyes measured her from the torso up; starting slowly from head to table, and then back up in a breeze. There was no doubt Jane was a good looking girl. She had that sort of classic elegance few people possess. Lucious blonde hair, mystical blue-gray eyes, and a sleek physique. The only thing that kept her from looking good on Luce's arm was her aura of spring-time innocence. But that could be fixed.
His mind wandered back to their internet conversation. She wanted him to be "real" - to be a "good guy", it would seem. Lucian could pull that off - but she would know he was lying. No, he had to make it look seamless - like an accident. He would have to play the fool for the moment - make it look convincing. First, flirt a bit, play her up, seduce her even - and of course she would see through it. Then he could try to be sincerely nice - which would run blatantly obvious in her mind. But then, finally, an instance would have to occur; an instance that would look "spontaneous", that would incite a presumably "real" response - and once she took the bait he could reel her in from there. Yes - the perfect plan.
During that quiet thought process Lucian had half-way escaped from reality, told by the glazed and plain expression on his face. He was thoughtful, which was obvious, as his lips pursed and cheeks hollowed as they always did whenever he mulled over something.

Jane noticed life enter Lucian’s face as she had sat down. His eyes sparked and he immediately looked pissed. For a heart beat she was worried he might be angry, but then she thought he would know she didn’t mean to be a smart ass by pulling the chair from his feet. She noticed his face go back to the serene, almost stone like expression. When like that she thought he could be in a museum as a Greek statue. He was good looking with his striking features and the way his hair fell around his face. It was a face that when smiling could be lovable, but when scowling or blank was nothing too special.
Jane waited, as Luce was silent. Probably thinking of what to say as their conversation the other night would make him think twice about what to say her from now on. Of course she believed he couldn’t convince her to love him. It was not something she did easily, open up and fall in love. She did truly want to, though, but it hadn’t happened, ad it wouldn’t be him.
She went over the few strategies he might go through. He might try and be consistently nice now, then maybe try to get a move in, but she would be suspicious. Perhaps he wouldn’t change much and just hope she could fall in love with him as he was, but that was stupid on his part. Or he could truly be himself. That was doubtful, but was the only thing that would work. The only question was how would she know it would be sincere.
Jane laughed when Luce finally talked. It wasn’t directed at him, nor was it a patronizing laugh. It was the kind of laugh that said she wasn’t too surprised that he would act that way. “Hi Lucian,” she responded. She wasn’t one to do “pet names” unless she was talking down to someone or really close friends, and Jane rarely talked down to someone.
“Everything’s fine. Just history homework,” she added, knowing he wasn’t interested in what was really going on. “And you? What brings you indoors on a nice afternoon?” she asked. The weather was still nice. Jane loved autumn when the wind was just getting slightly cold, but the sun was still warm and the leaves turned beautiful colors other than the boring green that she had seen for too long. Of course it would be getting darker earlier, but that was no problem for her.
Jane could feel Lucian’s gaze on her and she wondered what was going on in his mind. Well, she really didn’t want to know. It probably was not something that was good for her or anybody else’s mental health. She might never figure Mr. Stone out, and that slightly bothered her since, as she thought earlier, could be so good looking and likable if he was relaxed and smiling. Then his face took on that look again and she felt like she was on a school field trip to the local museum.

"I'm always indoors, silly," Lucian smirked, looking at her from under his eyebrows in a playful manner. His statement was quite true. Lucian never had much time to enjoy the "great outdoors" much. He had to keep truckin' on; never had much time to stop for anything, for that matter. The world is a terribly weary and tedious thing. It throws an immeasurable amount of "crap", for lack of a better word, your way and just keeps it coming. If it's not one thing, it's another. A person has to always be on guard, anticipating where the next blow is coming from in order to thwart it. Always tense, always ready, and always bleeding, for some things strike you down in the most unfair ways. There are no rules in circumstance, no boundaries, whatever fate has in store is likely to throw, and whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. It was only through little moments of peace could any rest be had. It was like a blissful, horrible, coma and Lucian couldn't afford to waste time as an invalid.
"I'm either studying, or practicing, or driving, or working at home, or getting laid," Luce continued on dryly, "I'll leave it to your guess which I'm doing right now," he shrugged and began to busily twiddle his pen between his long fingers. Mild callouses created speedbumps against his smooth flesh in certain places - places attributed to many years of arduous violin playing. His pen was flicked and catched in the most adroit manner. Luce's eyes didn't even glance down and the pen continued its little dance without falling. Lucian was mildly vexed and bored.
"Damnable government homework - I don't know why I bother," Luce yawned, putting his pen down and stretched back while putting his arms behind his neck, "Miss O's so... horrendously ugly. Bet she never had a good fuck in her life," Lucian added in callously, sidling a discontented glance out the window. There was a couple sitting under the large oak tree. A little blonde girl sitting in a boy's lap, grinning and talking and kissing in between. The boy was blushing more than the girl was. Lucian was unamused. Why the hell could they be talking about? All smiles, all bliss, all laughes. Luce's glassy stare was unmistakably dull.
That must've been what "little miss innocence" wanted. Someone to gawk and chide over and make all sorts of cutesy conversation with. It make Lucian's stomach churn. He knew he could never be like that - in an honest manner. It was just too... too unprotected. Too open - too real. Why couldn't someone like him for the person he was pretending to be? Inside he was vulnerable, unstable, self-concious, inarticulate - a real hot mess. Being wild and reckless was satisfying, and most people liked it. Being grave and a social master brought delight to his father. Why should he ever need to be anything other than those things? Lucian convinced himself that he didn't. He just had to pretend for their bet's sake.

“Oh, sorry,” Jane replied in a slightly sarcastic tone. Lucian always brought out the worst in her and she wasn’t quite sure if she liked that or not. She smirked back, then flipped her hair over one shoulder before taking up her pen in her left hand. Her notebook was open and she began to write down the answer to the first question. She doubted she would finish her homework with Mr. Stone sitting across from her, but she had been the one to sit down next to him and not vice versa. Maybe this was a bad idea, but something had made her decide to chose this table.
“Oh thank you. I assume you think I am just another dumb blond, Lucian. But something makes me believe you are not the studying type,” Jane said, smiling slightly. She noticed out of the corner of her eye that he was fiddling with his pen, making it do circles and what not. She then noticed his attention move past her and looked around to see a couple sweet talking to each other, sharing occasional kisses. Her own eyes sparkled as she thought of the happiness between them at that very moment. Sure he may be cheating on her, or she is only dating him until after prom, but these were not the thought or ideas that entered Jane’s head. She was a romantic who took pleasure in other people’s happiness and love. If she was to find the same then she would be lucky, but she was only 17.
“I thought you didn’t bother with your homework,” she replied to his response. “Miss O is not ugly, she has some charm to her. Perhaps you cannot see it as your view are more … superficial, but there is something to her to attract an older man. One who is worth getting to know and falling for,” she said, her eyes glossing over as she thought out Miss O dating some Sean Connery type.
“Sometimes I think you are utterly hopeless,” she said with a sigh. Jane meant hopeless in being a human being as she believed the human race to be kind and compassionate. Sure those thoughts were only on a good day and she wasn’t so blind to the terrible deeds that had happened and were happening, but she had hope for people. A few events and a lot of heart ache could change her views, but she wasn’t ready to let that guard down especially toward Lucian and his swindling ways to win their little bet.

"Why do people always say those things?" Lucian almost growled, stopping the turns of his pen completely and looking Jane square in the eyes with the most menacing glare, "Why do they say it? You say it; why? Please - I'm curious. 'Not the studying type'? 'Don't bother with my homework'? 'Hopeless'? C'mon, now, humor me." It was obvious something was taxing heavily on Lucian's mind. It probably all started the previous night with his little chat with Demerol and Guinna that ended in such a threatening manner. But, oddly enough, Lucian wasn't questioning in a rhetocial manner to be funny - he actually wanted to know why she made that assumption.
Now, the truth was, that Lucian had to "survive" school - not being the smartest and all. He procrastinated heavily and turned most things in late - but everything was finished and in fine order. Luce only paid off the Korean kids when he wasn't smart enough to figure things out on his own - and he only resorted to the most drastic measures when he was past the point of no return. But, quite honestly, Lucian was pulling 85% of the weight in his A+ grades. Another 10% was sheer luck, 4% Korean kids, and 1% "persuasive measures".
Lucian could only figure that it was his image of being such a man-whore that also made him look completely incompetant in other areas. Unfortunately, people who get a lot of sex aren't stupid. It was almost the same stereotype as saying that blondes were dumb aswell. Jane was blonde, but she certainly wasn't stupid. And even though Luce was a whore, didn't mean he was a fuck-off. This little misconception vexed him immeasurably. What was even worse was the fact that he knew perfectly well what he was doing and chose not to fix it.
Lucian wished in that moment he could've taken back his question. Now he'd just piss off Jane, reaffirm his notions, get a lecture on how to be "real", and potentially hear no end of it. Damn. And Luce absolutely hated angst. He wished he'd never persecuted himself to Demerol and Guinna over the internet; and he wished that he had never made that stupid bet with Jane in the first place. Good grief - if only he could take the entire damn week back.

Jane’s heart nearly stopped when Lucian looked at her square in the eyes. He could be quite fearsome and at the moment he was scaring her. She now wished she hadn’t said the things she had, but she still had to answer him. “Maybe your own actions in the past have left a reputation that is hard to shake,” she said, looking down at her paper. When she looked up again he was still glaring at her. His tone and facial expression distressed her and she could feel her eyes growing moist.
The last thing Jane wanted to do was cry at school, let alone in front of Lucian, but she hadn’t gotten enough sleep the night before ad being confronted the way she had been, though she deserved it, made her uneasy. “I am sorry for saying those things, it was only assumed,” she said truthfully. It seemed Lucian had a heart and a conscience after all, though she wasn’t quite sure if this was the truth or an act. Oh, it was so hard to pretend with him and try and figure out who he really was, especially since she found herself inevitably attracted to him. That alone made her want to cry more. Sure it was only attraction, but that scared her. She wanted to be attracted to the good guy.
But maybe it was only their on-line conversations that made her think that. No. It was the fact that she couldn’t figure him out. She had really gotten herself in a sticky situation and she was ready for disappointment.
“Look, this bet is on. If I win you just can’t sleep with anyone for a month,” she said. “I think that is reasonable, considering you think you will win anyways, though you’ll see the truth.” It was odd bringing up the bet in person, but she felt like he might want to back down, and she would really be on his bad side if she, little Miss Jane Darcy, had made Lucian Stone back out of a bet. She might even crush his pride, though he’d never admit to it (she thought.)

Lucian was quite surprised with the response he got. Not that her words weren't unheard of, but the way in which she said them. He was expecting her to go off on some tangent like most other people do (since everybody would like to fancy they didn't take crap from Lucian Stone), but Jane seemed almost intimidated. He meant to be serious and unamused, but not necessarily "scarey". Luce softened his expression; and the strangest little pang of emotion set off deep within him - he felt sorry. Sorry for being so harsh to the poor innocent girl that he had talked so awfully about with Colby.
"I'll take that bet," Lucian nodded with little passion. He almost wondered if he could force himself to lose. Would something like that do him for the better - or worse? However, Luce would never throw a bet. He had to win - and was scared, quite honestly, of sex deprivation. It was only his addiction because he had nothing else that could release the amount of stress, agression, and pent-up energy. Sex kept his insecurities buried - since girls seemed pleased enough with him; kept any suicidal (or homicidal) thoughts at bay; and maybe even created a false illusion that somebody loved him for the moment.
A flood of overwhelming concerns and thoughts were running through Lucian's head. What would I do? What would people say? He looked to Jane quite wistfully. She was such a happy little songbird most of the time. It seemed like the only trouble she had in the world right now was with the boy sitting in front of her. Lucian longed to talk with her - strange desire, no doubt. He opened his mouth, but hesitated as some familiar faces entered the library. No, they couldn't talk here. What if someone were to evesdrop? Lucian stood up from the table quite suddenly.
"Come on Jane; let's go outside for a few minutes," he ventured to say, offering a hand to help her out of her chair like he would at some fancy dinner; the effort was unconcious. He was actually looking through the window to a large oak tree just on the horizon of the school grounds. They could go there and sit on the other side where nobody could see them. "Just leave your stuff here - we'll be back." Some fresh air might do him some good as well. Lucian hadn't sat down and "enjoyed" the outdoors in what seemed like a very long time.

Jane was looking down, not noticing his change in expression, but if she did she would be quite surprised. She tried to focus on her homework as the silence took residence again. Either Lucian was thinking about what she had said or he had forgotten and went back to his own studying. Whichever it was, Jane was trying not to be interested. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, a thing she did when she tried to concentrate on something she wasn’t paying any attention to. Suddenly she heard him talk. Jane looked up and noticed the softened features.
“Alright,” she said, attempting a smile. Something about him agreeing made her feel like she might have possibly underestimated the guy. He was not the type who could just give up sex and she was not the type to let herself be tricked into falling head over heels for someone. This would be an interesting bet. But she was not going to let herself fall for him. There was always a difference between lust and love, if only Lucian could see the difference.
Suddenly there was silence again. When having a conversation with Lucian in person, she sometimes felt like she was talking to a Windows Operating System that was to the point of freezing, as it so often did. These long pauses made her always rethink what she had just said and made her second guess whether or not what she said was good or not. It was much like talking online where one could edit one’s speech before pressing the enter key. She looked around the library and saw a few new people enter. These faces had seemed to catch Lucian’s interest in someway as he stood up quite suddenly.
Jane looked up at him and looked quizzically at him as he held out his hand and said that they should go outside. She wondered why the sudden desire to go outside struck him. He could be such an enigma. “Um, ok,” she replied, standing up and taking his hand. She dropped her pen in her book and closed the cover. Suddenly she hoped that she was having an effect on him as he had said he didn’t go outside at the beginning of their conversation.

Lucian helped Jane out of her chair with ease, but little flourish. He then made a straight line towards the library exit as casually as possible, but walking fast nonetheless. Coming across the group of teens, he smirked and nodded in his professional manner, but didn't stop. He wasn't about to get swamped down by the crowd. The way he manuvered was of a subtle grace; even though he was tall, Lucian wasn't clumsy. He was smooth, and nagivated effortlessly. It was purely practice made perfect. He didn't look back to make sure Jane had followed until he was well into the hallway.
Satisfied, Luce continued on. The hall was relatively quiet - practically empty. He was heading towards the large exit doors that glowed with sunlight. It was like a scene from heaven or something. His arms hit the push-bars with a clank, and the doors opened up into the outside. He stood for a moment, holding the door open for Jane to pass through while he let the brisk autumn smell enter his clouded lungs.
He almost wheezed; which was ironic. It was just as nice outside as it looked from the window. The sun made the chilly wind just bearable, while a few striated clouds reached overhead. The grass was still green, but the fallen red leaves made a crunchy sound under their feet. Lucian's fast pace finally slowed down once they were halfway to his appointed tree. He didn't realize how much he rushed until there was no one else rushing by. He stuck his hands in the pocket of his pants and started to stroll easily, but keeping up perfect posture was not something he could shake off quite yet.
The breeze ruffled Luce's hair backwards while the sun played with his green eyes. He turned his head to give a half-smile to Jane, but that was all he was giving up at the moment. Reaching the huge oak, Lucian put his long hand on the trunk, gazing up at the many branches. Some were empty, some were full; some red, and some still green. He considered how fun a tree like this would be to climb - but didn't dare. Instead he plopped down on the ground and used the trunk as a backrest.
"Fine. It is nicer out here," he tried to be serious, but broke off into a bit of a good-natured scoff. He sat quietly for a moment again, hesitating, before finally bringing himself to speak his mind, "Hey, I'm sorry for getting all defensive in there. I don't really need you to tell me what's wrong with me. I sort of know - and sometimes I like to hear it; but you shouldn't have to bother with the crap I pull."

Jane forgot to grab her sweater as she tried to follow Lucian out the library. He seemed to have a great intent on getting out without delay, though it was proving harder for her. She had to smile and nod at a few friends as she passed by them, and when she looked back Lucian had almost disappeared into the hall way. She jogged to catch up and could feel her cheeks flush a rosy pink as her hair fell around her face, slightly wild. She tucked it behind her ears before following him down the hallway and outside.
She smiled at Lucian as he held the doors open for her and waited as he led her to the oak tree. It was an interesting choice for them to be, but she always loved the tree and the pleasant shade it gave, though it was a little chilly to be standing in the shade. She was going to say something, but stopped when she noticed Lucian’s reaction to the serene autumn afternoon. That prompted Jane to look up at the nearly clear blue skies and notice how everything seemed to glow a sort of reddish orange hue from the sun. Everything shown with brilliance, even her hand as she held it out and observed it. This was one reason why autumn was her favorite season.
Jane felt the soft breeze brush against her cheeks and engage with her hair, dancing an intricate dance. She looked over at Lucian who was smiling, or so she thought. Jane smiled back. This moment was extremely romantic, more so if Lucian wasn’t there to let her enjoy it completely, but he was and she would have to make the most of it. If he wasn’t there she would probably throw up her hands and spin as fast as she could, letting the rays fall on her pale shoulders. That would make her look like a 5 year old, but it was something that everyone did when no one was watching.
When Lucian sat down, Jane took his cue and sat down too, though her back faced the sun as she looked at him. “Yes, it is nicer. Though it won’t be when winter’s settled in and the trees look like death,” she said. Winter was only lovely with snow. When everything was covered in a white blanket. The Eskimos had thousands of words for the different types of snow. The French had maybe four.
“It’s alright. I just sometimes wonder and feel like I have to tell you, but most of the time I know I should just shut up.” Jane paused. “I am truly worried about you, Lucian. You’re my friend, in some ways, and I care about you.” She stopped, wishing she could take that last bit back, but the moment had made her speak without thinking. She decided to continue. “I just wish you could get through your problems because I believe you deserve better. I think I can see the good in you.” Jane saw the good in everything, or almost everything. She wasn’t too stupid though and did know when there was no good in things, like genocide or wars. She was just hoping that at this moment Lucian was being honest and wasn’t acting for their bet.

Lucian listened to what she had to say and could only manage a nod at the end. She actually worried about him? She must've been the one and only person in Waylon who gave a damn about if he lived or died. But not only that - because this was the kicker - she saw some good in him. Good? What good? She must have been a remarkable reader in order to pull from Lucian what he couldn't see in himself. But it was nice to hear - coming from a real human being. And in those few moments, what Lucian lacked in outward emotion, he made up for in respect for Jane.
"I love the end of fall - when the first hard frost comes through and makes everything look like it's been dipped in sugar," Lucian mused, his eyes falling in Jane's; "I love the smell of fresh-baked apple pie in the Grocery around this time of year. I love... when the pumpkins go on sale and little kids dressed in wool sweaters beg their moms to carve one. I love the dreadful angora scarves my grandma knits - that I never wear, of course. I love a lot of things about fall."
Lucian almost felt guilty about spewing all that out - but he also felt good at the same time. At the moment he had few confidants that he could speak openly with - especially on such sentimental and potentially "weakening" matters. And now it was good that at least one person knew that he didn't hate everything. Lucian got the impression that if he told those things to anyone else they'd just laugh in his face. So he never did.
"What do you like about fall?" he offered, feeling fairly defenseless - and completely out of his league. The expression he adopted was somewhere between the lines of uncertainty and hesitation. He was trying to be open - and not just to pretend. He had too much respect for Jane right now to be pretentious, and he was feeling a little guilty about this whole arrangment they were going through.
What a pretty little soul Jane Darcy was. She looked perfectly in place outdoors - like she was a dainty yellow flower dancing in the breeze. He, on the other hand, looked completely out of place outside; like a nasty stray dog trampling over everything in sight. Lucian had grace, but few people possessed the truly mesmerizing qualities that she did.

Jane’s eyes widened even more like a puppy dog as she listened to Lucian talk. His voice seemed softer and more real, more believable as he told her things she never thought she would hear from his lips. The things he described made it even more believable since those weren’t things everyone loved. The cookie cutter ideas that people were forced to pretend to like. Those were things to be observed and discovered and enjoyed in one’s time.
Somehow Jane found herself smiling and believing. He could tell her right now that he would change, that there was some feelings behind the bet. That he made the bet because he liked her and thought she could be of help. Of course these were embarrassing thoughts that she had on occasion, but she sometimes felt them and needed to be free to think. The only freedom one had was to think. Even writing thoughts on a page was compromising. Then he asked her a question. It took her only a moment to answer.
“Everything,” she replied, starting with the general and moving to the specific. “I love the soft breeze that blows through the city, making way the leaves swirl around in the streets and parks. I love the crunch of the dead leaves under my feet as I walk. I love the smell. That slightly cold, slightly musty, slightly sweet smell. I love wearing sweaters and scarves. I love that it is cold enough to make hot chocolate feel special.” As Jane was talking, her eyes lit up with the thought. “I love fall because it is the perfect time for dates. To go to a movie theater when it’s still light and come out dark. Even when I don’t have a date I go to the movies in the fall.”
Jane looked over at Lucian. “It’s nice when you just talk,” she said, hoping that by saying that he wouldn’t clam up.
